Hello everyone, are you surprised to find a pic not mine?

So, with this post different than usual, I inaugurate a new series: As you probably alredy understand it's  all about interviews with other girls that, like me, decided to switch to a vintage style, in particular for any decade there will be an interview, until the 1950's, plus one “bonus” interview, but this will be explained later ...
This idea came in my mind during one of those thoughtful nights, you know, and I immediately put it into practice: the purpose is making known the vintage style comprehensively involving other girls; this because I really think it's interesting to know other story besides mine, showing all aspects of the vintage community in Italy.
As I always say when I'm asked if it's difficult to adopt such a particular style, there are no rules and everyone can express themselves on their own way. So, let's begin knowing Alessia and her 1920s inspired style.

Dunque, con questo post diverso dal solito inauguro una nuova “serie”: Come avrete già immaginato si tratterà di interviste ad altre ragazze che, come me, hanno deciso di adottare uno stile vintage, in particolare ci sarà un intervista per decennio, fino agli anni 50, più una “bonus”, ma di questo ci occuperemo più avanti...
L'idea mi è venuta in una di quelle notti in cui più che dormire si sta nel letto a pensare e mi sono subito attivata per concretizzarla: l'intento è quello di far conoscere in modo più completo lo stile vintage coinvolgendo anche altre ragazze, poiché credo fortemente che sia interessante scoprire altre storie oltre alla mia, mostrando tutte le sfaccettature della vintage community in Italia.
Come dico sempre quando mi capita che mi venga chiesto se sia difficile seguire uno stile così particolare, non esistono regole e il bello è che ognuno può esprimere se stesso a suo modo. cominciamo quindi subito a conoscere Alessia, e il suo stile di ispirazione anni 20.

First of all: the origins...

How did you come into contact with the vintage style? 

It all started in 2013. Hearing about vintage, I searched more info on the web and I buyed the book Wearable Vintage Fashion by Jo Waterhouse and Clare Bridge. I found of that there were people who whore vintage clothes everyday, mixing different decades or recreating the looks of their favourite era. I always loved clothes from the past but since then I never thought I could wear them everyday.


Has it been a particular episode or a gradual process?  
Immediately since then I decided that I wanted to embrace vintage style, but to have a vintage wardrobe takes time, patience and money. Since the beginning the decades that strucked me the most were the 20's and the 30's but the clothes from these periods are the most difficult to find in good wearable condition, so they're really high priced. Being a student I could'nt spend that much. I decided to put aside my love for this decades and to wait until the time I would have find a job and when I also could take sewing lessons to recreate my favourite dresses. In the meantime, after having discovered the world of repro clothing, I dedicated myself to the 50's. Another one of my problem was confronting myself with the rest of the world. I'm a shy person and I hate to have people staring at me so I was still hesitant to fully embrace this style.At the end of 2015 a lot of things happened to me and after reading a post on Miss Amy May's blog that has inspired me so much, I decided that I would have continued to build my vintage wardrobe and have the chance of dressing only with vintage or vintage style clothes.
I've bought some original pieces from the 50's and I have started gradually to approch 20's style. I bought some pieces that are close to the looks of the decade. The vintage gods were nice with me because I found a bunch of nice pieces at H&M. This summer I discovered some bloggers and some people on instagram that are doing 20's and 30's and I decided to fully embrace this awesome decade. I still love other decades but 20s (and 30s too, but a bit less) are those that make me crazy! 
I got again the bob and thank to a little saving and to the infinite kindness of some online vintage sellers, now I have a little collection of vintage pieces. For now I dress in a vintage style during weekends only and in my free time; I still mainly use modern clothes but hope I'll have a wide collection some day!


Who are your style icons (both from the past and of the present) and how  you get inspiration for your outfits?

I don't have an actually inspiring icon. I love Louise Brooks and adore Mary and Edith Crawley's style in “Downton Abbey”. I take inspiration from pictures of that time, from pages of old catalogues and magazines, from tv series and movies set in this period (Dowton Abbey, Miss Fisher, The House of Eliott) and from fashion history books: 1920's Fashion sourcebook is goldmine!

Prima di tutto le origini...

Come sei venuta in contatto con lo stile vintage?

Tutto è iniziato nel 2013. Sentendo parlare del vintage, ho iniziato a cercare informazioni in rete ed ho anche comprato il libro Moda vintage di Jo Waterhouse e Clare Bridge. Ho scoperto che c'erano persone che indossavano abiti vintage quotidianamente, o mixando varie epoche o ricreando interi outfit della loro epoca preferita. Ho sempre amato gli abiti del passato ma fino ad allora non avevo mai pensato di poterli indossare tutti i giorni.

Quando hai deciso di adottare questo stile? C'è stato un episodio in particolare o è stato un processo graduale?

Fin da subito ho deciso che avrei adottato questo stile ma per rinnovare un'intero guardaroba in stile vintage ci vuole pazienza, tempo e denaro.
Sin dall'inizio i decenni che mi hanno colpita di più sono stati gli anni 20 e 30 ma gli abiti di questi decenni sono i più difficili da trovare in buone condizioni e quindi sono i più costosi. Essendo una studentessa non mi potevo permettere certe cifre. Decisi così che avrei accantonato la mia passione per questi decenni a quando avrei avuto un lavoro e a quando avrei potuto pagarmi un corso di cucito per imparare a creare gli abiti che amavo da sola. Così nel frattempo, dopo aver scoperto anche il mondo degli abiti repro, mi sono dedicata agli anni 50.
Un altro mio problema è stato quello di affrontare il mondo esterno. Sono una persona timida ed odio essere guardata dalla gente, quindi esitavo ancora ad abbracciare pienamente questo stile. A fine 2015 sono successe molte cose e dopo aver letto un post sul blog di Miss Amy May che mi ha molto ispirata, ho deciso che avrei continuato in tutti i modi a costruire il mio guardaroba vintage per poter un giorno indossare quotidianamente solo abiti vintage o in stile vintage.
All'inizio ho comprato qualche capo ed accessorio originale degli anni 50. Il mio avvicinamento agli anni 20 è stato graduale. Ho iniziato a comprare abiti moderni che potessero riprodurre lo stile dell'epoca. Gli dei del vintage mi hanno voluto bene ed ho trovato varie cose carine da h&m.
Solo a partire da questa estate, ho deciso che avrei ripreso a pieno gli anni 20 grazie alla scoperta di altre blogger e di diversi profili instagram che mi hanno fatto decidere ad abbracciare pienamente questo fantastico decennio. Continuo ad amare gli altri decenni del vintage ma gli anni 20 (ed anche i 30, anche se un po' meno) sono quelli che mi fanno veramente impazzire!
Mi sono rifatta il caschetto e grazie a qualche risparmio e all'infinita gentilezza di alcune proprietarie di negozi vintage online, adesso ho una piccola collezione di pezzi dell'epoca. Per adesso mi vesto vintage solo nel week-end e nel tempo libero e principalmente abiti moderni ma spero un giorno di avere una vasta collezione!

Chi sono le tue icone di stile (sia del passato sia attuali) e come prendi ispirazione per i tuoi outfit?

Devo ammettere che non ho una vera e propria icona di riferimento. Amo Louise Brooks ed adoro lo stile di Mary ed Edith Crawley nella serie tv Downton Abbey. Prendo ispirazione da foto di persone dell'epoca, dalle pagine di vecchi cataloghi e vecchie riviste, da serie tv e film ambientati in questa epoca (Downton Abbey, Miss Fisher, The House of Elliot) e da libri di storia della moda: 1920's Fashion sourcebook è una miniera d'oro!

Now your style...

Which are your must have pieces?

My must have pieces at the moment are an overcoat and a necklace in a egiptian revival style, they are autenthic 1920s pieces.

Do you ever wear modern clothes?

As I alredy said, during large part of the week I still dress myself with modern clothes , especially in cold months, due to the comfort and to the fact that I still not have a large vintage wardrobe.

Where do you buy or take your clothes and accessories?

Mostly on online shops, both vintage and reproductions ones, and sometimes at vintage shops in Florence or some fairs/markets. I bought almost all of my modern clothing that fit a 1920' s style at H&M.

Do you wear also repros? Have you ever made by yourself your accesories and clothes?

Yes, I do wear repros. At the moment I never created something, but I'm learning to knit and hope to make a coat from an original pattern shortly. Sooner or later I also hope to learn to sew.

Which is the piece of your wardrobe that you like most and why?

The piece of my wardrobe I most like is my original 20s overcoat. Love its colors, structure and decorations. It's a very special garment and I feel really lucky to have it. When I wear it with a cloche I really feel an authentic flapper!

How long does it take to get ready to go out?

Usually it takes one hour, one hour and a half if I go for a more elaborate make up. I'm quite slow but fortunately I have my careless hair bob!

Let's talk about hair...which hairstyles fashinets you most? Do you achieve them?

I really like finger waves and as long as I didn't have the bangs I was able to quite achieve them, but I find them difficult to make without finger wave clamps. It takes exercise! Since I have bangs I didn't experiment new hairstyles any more but I would like to try again.

Are there some pieces of you vintage style that you don't like and you would never wear?

There's a piece I would buy only for collecting: it's a wig made of metallic thread, usually in a silver color or platinum, used by women during 1920's and 30's. I don't think I would never use it in public!

Ma veniamo ora al tuo stile...

Quali sono i tuoi pezzi must have?

I miei pezzi must have al momento sono un soprabito e una collana in stile revival egiziano, che sono pezzi autentici degli anni 20.

Ti capita mai di indossare abiti in stile contemporaneo?

Come già accennato, al momento, durante la maggior parte della settimana ancora indosso abiti moderni, soprattutto nei mesi più freddi, sia per comodità sia per il fatto che ancora non ho un guardaroba vintage molto vasto. 

Dove acquisti o prendi i tuoi abiti e accessori?

Soprattuto su negozi online, sia vintage che di riproduzioni ed a volte nei negozi vintage di Firenze oppure a qualche fiera/mercatino. I miei abiti moderni in stile anni 20 li ho acquistati quasi tutti da H&M.

Indossi anche riproduzioni di vestiti vintage o hai mai creato tu i tuoi abiti/accessori?
Sì,indosso anche riproduzioni. Al momento non ho mai creato niente di mio, ma sto imparando a lavorare a maglia e spero al più presto di farmi un cappotto partendo da un modello originale. Prima o poi spero anche di imparare a cucire.

 Qual è il pezzo del tuo armadio che più ti piace e perché?

Il pezzo del mio armadio che mi piace di più è il mio soprabito originale degli anni 20.Adoro i colori, la struttura e le decorazioni. È un pezzo molto speciale e mi sento molto fortunata a possederlo. Quando lo indosso insieme ad una cloche, mi sento un'autentica flapper!

 Quanto ci metti a prepararti?

In genere ci metto un'ora, un'ora e mezza se faccio un trucco più elaborato. Sono piuttosto lenta ma per fortuna grazie al caschetto non devo preoccuparmi molto dei capelli!

Parliamo di capelli...quali acconciature o pieghe ti affascinano maggiormente? Riesci ad ottenerle?

Mi piacciono molto le finger waves e quando non avevo la frangia riuscivo ad ottenere qualcosa ma senza delle pinze speciali ( in inglese le chiamano wave clamps) trovo non siano molto facili da fare. Ci vuole esercizio. Da quando ho la frangia non ho più sperimentato con le acconciature ma mi piacerebbe riniziare a farlo.

C'è qualche pezzo del tuo stile vintage che non ti piace e non indosseresti mai?

C'è un pezzo che acquisterei solo per collezione: sono delle parrucche fatte con fili di metallo, di solito color argento o platino, che le donne indossavano durante gli anni 20 e 30. Non credo che le indosserei mai in pubblico!

Lastly, some chat about you

Have you ever been noticed because of your style (positively or negatively)?

Both positively ( I suppose at least!) and negatively but no one has ever told me something directly or stopped me on street. Usually people look at me and just make comments. Sometimes is rather annoying when people stare at me but I understand. It's important to not pay attention to them.

How does your ambience approach your style? In family or in your circle of friends is there someone who wear a retro style?

From my female friends I often received compliments and one of them really appreciate rockabilly style that she sometimes match with modern clothes, but none have a retro style like mine.

Do you consider yourself as a “vintage” person? Wearing this style changed you someway?

I've always loved the things of the past, I like things and doing things that nowadays people don't like, I can say I am, in many aspects, a “vintage” person. On this point I remember a funny episode; speaking with my boyfriend about the fact that since I was a child I have always liked broth instead of hating it like others, he said: “You are vintage inside”.

What do you like of the past and would you take in today's society? What do you prefer of the present instead?

About the past one of the things I like the most is the ways people used to spend time together. Despite social networks that we have now, I think there was more social aggregation. I also appreciate that many people were happy with the little they had. 

About the present I like having much more possibility to choose; despite some social conditioning are still present, anyone is free to be whoever wants.

In ultimo, parliamo un po' di te

E' mai successo che qualcuno ti notasse (positivamente o negativamente) per il tuo stile?

Sia positivamente (o almeno credo!) che negativamente ma nessuno mi ha mai rivolto direttamente la parola o fermata per strada. Di solito le persone mi guardano e si limitano a fare commenti tra di sé. A volte è piuttosto fastidioso essere fissate con insistenza ma capisco le reazioni delle persone. L'importante è non farci caso.

Come si pone l'ambiente con cui sei a contatto rispetto al tuo stile? In famiglia o nella tua cerchia di amici c'è qualcun'altro che segue uno stile retrò?

Dalle amiche ho ricevuto spesso complimenti e ad una mia amica piace lo stile rockabilly che a volte mixa con abiti moderni ma nessuno segue uno stile retro come lo seguo io. 

Ti consideri una persona “vintage”? Vestirti così ti ha cambiata dentro in qualche modo?
Ho sempre amato le cose del passato, mi piacciono cose e mi piace fare delle cose che alle persone adesso non piacciono più,quindi posso dire di essere per certi aspetti una persona “vintage”.

A questo proposito ho un adetto divertente: parlando con il mio ragazzo del fatto che sin da bambina mi è sempre piaciuta la minestra in brodo, mentre molte persone la odiano,lui mi ha detto: “Sei vintage inside”. 

Cosa ti piace del passato e porteresti nella società odierna? Cosa invece apprezzi del presente rispetto al passato?

Del passato mi piace soprattutto i modi in cui le persone passavano del tempo insieme. Nonostante tutto i social che abbiamo adesso, trovo che prima ci fosse molta più aggregazione sociale. Apprezzo anche il fatto che molte persone riuscissero ad essere contente con poco
Del presente apprezzo il fatto che adesso abbiamo molta più possibilità di scelta, nonostante ci siano ancora dei condizionamenti sociali, possiamo essere molto più liberi di essere quello che vogliamo.
