Orient Express

Hey, finally I come back to write a new post about 1940's fashion. For the second time it deals with a wedding I was invited, and as always, the idea for an outfit turned up from old photos found on the web. (You can find the links to shops and websites at the end of the post)

If you are wondering what does 1940s have to do with oriental style, you will be surprsed to know that the Cheongsam, a traditional chinese garment, was highly appreciated in those days and adopted in the occidental culture; as also riported by www.glamourdaze.com:

“ One piece of Asian dress to make an impact in Hollywood fashion during the 1940’s thanks to actresses like Yoshiko Yamaguchi and Li Li-Hua was the Chinese Cheongsam, a tight fitting adaptation of the traditional Qipao which materialised during the 1920’s and unlike the shapeless shift dresses of the flapper, hugged the curves of the body. In China this dress was hugely popular throughout the Republican era of the 1930’s and on into the 1940’s. “

In particular, this one is an autenthic silk Cheongsam from late 1940's/early 1950's, the fabric is in a cream color with embroidered dark pink daisies; this delicate detail is what fashinated me, it makes the dress at the same time elegant and simple. I'm so happy to have grabbed it, I think I will never let it go away from my closet. ;D

With this kind of dress, flawless and peculiar, few proper accessories are enough.
In order to make it more fitted to my body I chinched the waist with a belt, long seeked in the same color of the shoes to assemble a perfect match and, once found, shipped from California to Italy in record time. It arrived one day before the wedding, just in time!
Shoes are classic 1940's leather slingback with a small peep-toe in solid green embellished by an amazing cut detailing. I tought that green (one of my favourite colors) would be a nice combination with the shades of the dress, and, actually it is.
When I started to buy vintage I didn't mean to buy even autenthic shoes, yet those are the most confortable heels I have at the moment...obviously I adore them!

Then, it was time to pick a bag, and this amazing bamboo purse it immediately seems to be perfect for this outfit. It's vintage from 1970's with a nice 1940's mood.
The bracelet is a rare 40's piece: each plate is carved with a different oriental theme, one beautiful and peculiar than the next; and it's curious that this was my first purchase of the intere ensamble, even before having the dress.

This outfit took a lot of time to put toghether, when you have to deal with vintage stuff you know that it could be a long process: many researches, questions, expetations and so on, but it's important to have patience and never give up, because somewhere in the world someone is selling that  thing you looking for, and, at the end, the final result is what makes you think “I did it!”.
